Эти два слова соперничали за первенство в употреблении в речи в течение нескольких веков. Основное их значение — впустить, разрешить пройти куда-либо, это действие относится как к человеку входящему, так и к человеку, разрешающему вход (швейцару, привратнику). Чаще употребляется слово admission. Надо заметить, что это слово используется в качестве определения: admission fee/money/ticket; admission £1. Преподавателя или секретаря, занимающихся приёмом студентов в колледжи и университеты, называют the admissions tutor/secretary/officer и т. д. Admission может также обозначать признание вины, преступления. Admittance же не сдаёт своих позиций и особенно часто встречается на вывесках на дверях и воротах:No admittance, except on business. — Нет входа, кроме как по делу.
